This chapter will explore some of the basic elements of the neural control of movement. A brief discussion of the various muscle systems of the body will be provided along with the role that each plays in our ability to navigate through our environment and keep our vital organs, such as the heart and lungs, operating. The amazing influence of microscopic, synaptic communication from neurons to muscle fibers will be illustrated with a look at the neuromuscular junction and the motor units that control muscle contraction. We will then zoom out a bit and review the multiple central and peripheral nervous system circuits involved with the control of both voluntary and involuntary motor functions. Lastly, the impact of specific disease states and neural damage to motor function will be examined.
